One of the two priorities for our Local this year (alongside immigration solidarity) is establishing internet access as a public utility in Thurston County. Internet access is an essential part of most people's lives, but rather than making sure we provide this service, our current system prioritizes the profits of a few monopolistic companies, like Comcast and CenturyLink.
Our goal is to create a publicly own Internet Service Provider (ISP) that can guarantee access to all Thurston County residents at minimal cost. Cities around the country have created community-owned ISPs that provide more reliable, faster access than private ISPs at lower costs. Indeed, one of the of the largest municipally owned ISPs in the country Tacoma Click, which provides Internet access and cable TV to residents of Pierce County.
